Mission Spotlight
New Family Health History Tool
Knowing your family health
history is important because it can help you learn about your risk of
developing breast cancer. This information can then be used as you talk with
your doctor about your breast health. Komen has adapted the Surgeon General's
"My Family Health Portrait" tool to make it easier to gather and
organize your family health history. We encourage you to explore this
new internet-based tool, gather your own family
health history, and share it with others!

we also have staff members with family members who are survivors. We hope that the
awareness that our partnership brings to the community will allow more
people to learn about the resources Komen of Northeast

Worried about your screening
mammogram results? The wait is over. Now

And, if your mammogram reveals an area of concern, you can choose to have a
full work up at your earliest convenience. The work up includes additional
imaging tests and you are given the results that day. If a surgical biopsy is
recommended, we will schedule your consultation with one of our world class
specialized breast providers before leaving the office.

Does a Fast Breast MRI make sense
for me?
The “Fast Breast MRI” is a 10-minute,
self-pay examination that scientific studies have shown to be effective in
finding invasive breast cancers. It is ideal for women with dense breast tissue
who desire additional breast cancer screening but do not meet the criteria to
qualify for a conventional breast MRI study based on their lifetime risk for
breast cancer. The conventional breast MRI study (45 minutes) is intended for
women with a higher risk for developing breast cancer, such as BRCA1/2 genetic
mutations, etc. The Fast Breast MRI does not detect the spectrum of diseases
that can be detected by the conventional breast MRI exam. As with any screening
exam, additional non-cancerous lesions may also be detected that may require
biopsy or additional follow-up.
What to Expect
The Fast Breast MRI requires an injection
of contrast that is given through an IV. The study will be interpreted by a
specially trained breast radiologist and the results will be sent to your
doctor. You will need a doctor’s order for this exam. There is no radiation
associated with this study.
Who Should Get this Procedure?
The Fast Breast MRI is a low cost, self-pay
supplemental study for women with dense breast tissue who want a screening that
is more sensitive to breast cancer than mammography. The Fast Breast MRI may
detect cancers not visible on a mammogram but is not intended to replace
mammography. Routine screening mammograms are still recommended.
