Volunteer Opportunities: Cleveland Race Committee Members

In preparation for the 25th Anniversary Cleveland Race for the Cure, we are actively searching for individuals to help us fill a vital role on our Race Leadership Committee. We are searching for a passionate and dedicated individual to act as our Teams Chair. The vast majority of the funds we raise through the Race for the Cure come from teams. The Teams Chair will help us in our team recruitment, oversight, and retention efforts. For a full description of the Team Chair responsibilities, please click here.

We will also be looking for individuals to join the various Race Committees we have; more information on those roles will be available in April. If you are interested in volunteering as the Teams Chair or on the Race Committee, please email Andrew at AKluge@komenneohio.org.

Mission Spotlight

Check a Box, Save a Life

Did you know Ohio taxpayers are able to donate a portion of their state income tax refund directly to Ohio’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP)? By checking the BCCP box on the Ohio tax return form, Ohio taxpayers have the power to save a life.

Ohio’s BCCP, funded at the current levels, is only able to serve about five percent of the eligible women in Ohio. The BCCP Tax Check-Off enables the program to serve up to 1,700 additional women (an 11 percent increase) with lifesaving and cost-saving access to early detection, diagnostics, and treatment.

Why check the box? Women in Ohio are dying from breast cancer at a higher rate than the rest of the country. Early detection is key to survival and saves money in the long run. At late stages of breast cancer, treatment can cost three times more than early stage treatment.

How does BCCP help? The program provides breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic services to low-income, uninsured, and underinsured women in Ohio. BCCP is a critical and lifesaving safety net for the working poor in our state.

What is the impact? More than 270,000 Ohio women are in need of BCCP services. In the 2014 and 2015 tax years, Ohio citizens contributed more than $169,000 to the program through the tax check-off, allowing thousands of additional, resource starved Ohio women entry into the program. 2016 amounts are unavailable at this time.

What you can do: Check the box on you state income tax return to donate a portion of your return to BCCP. You could save a life!

The 2018 Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference
Opens to Rave Reviews

The Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference was held on Saturday, March 10th. More than 150 individuals joined Komen Northeast Ohio and our partners in this first ever conference designed to educate metastatic patients, breast cancer survivors, caregivers, and the general public on the ABCs of metastatic breast cancer. We received nothing but positive feedback on the event and are pleased to announce we are in the process of securing sponsorship to host the event again in 2019!

The Metastatic Conference featured keynote presentations from Mary McGillicuddy of the Metastatic Breast Cancer Project and Komen Research Scholar Dr. Danny Welch of the University of Kansas, a panel of prestigious local oncologists, an interactive complementary therapy fair, vendor fair, and much more.

And many congratulations to Wendy Kozel, the winner of the 2018 Jones-Hendryx Forever Fighter Award.

A sincere thank you to our sponsors for the event - MetroHealth Cancer Center and Odonate Therapeutics - our partners who helped in planning the event - The Cleveland Metavivors, Hospice of the Western Reserve, The Gathering Place, and University Hospitals - and everyone who attended. Thank you also to Clifford-Norton Studios for providing the great photos. Be on the lookout for the date for the 2019 Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference!

Solon High School: Comets for the Cure

solon 4.jpg

Every Fall, the Solon Schools paint the gyms and playing fields pink for a week to bring awareness to and raise funds for Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio to support the women of our community!

The annual Comets for the Cure Week is focused around four home athletic contests – football, volleyball and boys and girls soccer – as well as a community-building event sponsored by the Solon High School chapter of SADD: A Staff Dunk Tank.

On the day of the dunk tank event, teachers, administrators and other SHS staff members head into the tank to be dunked based on those who received the most student “votes.” Students voted for the teachers and staff members they most wanted to see dunked by donating $1 per vote during lunch periods the week prior to the event.

The Solon High School Principal Erin Short always takes the first turn in the tank in the dark before school begins from 7 to 7:45 a.m. and invites any student, staff member, or parent to donate $10 to drop her in the tank.

At each of the Pink Out games, students wear their Comets for the Cure shirts or something pink to show their support. Each purchased shirt by a student yields free entrance to all Pink Out games and a donation to the Komen NEO. Raffle baskets, bake sales of pink food items, and other fundraisers are also a part of each game.

The Comets for the Cure event keeps getting bigger and bigger, and this year they raised almost $14,000! It truly is inspiring that this schools district comes together to help the women of Northeast Ohio. Komen Northeast Ohio thanks you!

Did You Know?

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are the best-known genes linked to breast cancer risk. Everyone has these genes, but some people have an inherited mutation in one or both that increases the risk of breast cancer. These genes can be passed to you from either parent and can affect the risk of breast cancer in both women and men. Click here to learn more.

Does a Fast Breast MRI make sense for me?

The “Fast Breast MRI” is a 10-minute, self-pay examination that scientific studies have shown to be effective in finding invasive breast cancers. It is ideal for women with dense breast tissue who desire additional breast cancer screening but do not meet the criteria to qualify for a conventional breast MRI study based on their lifetime risk for breast cancer. The conventional breast MRI study (45 minutes) is intended for women with a higher risk for developing breast cancer, such as BRCA1/2 genetic mutations, etc. The Fast Breast MRI does not detect the spectrum of diseases that can be detected by the conventional breast MRI exam. As with any screening exam, additional non-cancerous lesions may also be detected that may require biopsy or additional follow-up.

What to Expect

The Fast Breast MRI requires an injection of contrast that is given through an IV. The study will be interpreted by a specially trained breast radiologist and the results will be sent to your doctor. You will need a doctor’s order for this exam. There is no radiation associated with this study.

Who Should Get this Procedure?

The Fast Breast MRI is a low cost, self-pay supplemental study for women with dense breast tissue who want a screening that is more sensitive to breast cancer than mammography. The Fast Breast MRI may detect cancers not visible on a mammogram but is not intended to replace mammography. Routine screening mammograms are still recommended.
