Mission Spotlight

Komen Northeast Ohio 2018-2019 Grantees Announced

Every year, Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio takes the dollars raised through the Race for the Cure®, the annual Pinktacular gala, third-party events, and other fundraisers and invests those funds back into the local community. Thanks to our Community Profile - a needs assessment that identifies areas and populations most at-risk of developing and dying from breast cancer - Komen Northeast Ohio is the local expert when it comes to understanding how to combat breast cancer in our region.

Organizations that receive grant funds from Komen Northeast Ohio must direct their services to those communities and individuals identified as most at-risk. Programs must use evidence-based practices, like patient navigation and mobile mammography, and culturally competent methods. Additionally, programs are held accountable to high standards and quality of care, linking individuals in-need with services outside the scope of healthcare, including transportation and child care assistance.

For the 2018-2019 grant year, Komen Northeast Ohio is investing close to $150,000 into two local organizations - The Center for Appalachia Research in Cancer Education (CARE) and MetroHealth Cancer Center. For more information on these programs, the grant application and review process, and the Community Profile, click here.

Rally for the Cure

Rally for the Cure

Rally for the Cure is a grassroots program using golf, tennis, and other social programs that has raised more than $80 million for Komen-funded breast cancer research grants and local breast cancer community programs nationwide. As of 2017, management of the Rally program operates from Susan G. Komen®’s national headquarters, located in Dallas, TX. In 2017, Northeast Ohio Rally for the Cure events raised over $24,000!

Since 1996, more than 35,000 volunteer Ambassadors have helped Komen and our nationwide Affiliates fund life-saving community breast cancer programs and research to find cures for breast cancer. These passionate, dedicated Ambassadors have also helped educate more than 2 million people about their breast health and breast cancer. Rally is helping advance Komen’s Bold Goal to reduce current breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in the U.S. by 2026.

You choose a date and activity to Rally around. Invite your friends, family, and community to participate. Spread the word. It’s that simple!

Rally for the Cure no longer requires a $20 registration fee to participate. As a result, all funds donated at a Rally for the Cure are tax deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law! Also, to improve efficiency, all event Ambassadors will be directed to the new rallyforthecure.com website to register their event.

For more information or if you are interested in holding a Rally, visit rallyforthecure.com or contact Leslie Hurrell at lhurrell@komenneohio.org.

Did You Know?

Intravenous (IV) chemotherapy is usually covered under an insurance plan's medical benefit, whereas oral (by mouth) chemotherapy is usually covered under a plan's prescription drug benefit. Komen Northeast Ohio played an instrumental role in helping pass legislation in Ohio that required insurers to provide the same or better coverage for oral breast cancer medications as they do for IV medications. And, if your mammogram reveals an area of concern, you can choose to have a full work up at your earliest convenience. The work up includes additional imaging tests and you are given the results that day. If a surgical biopsy is recommended, we will schedule your consultation with one of our world class specialized breast providers before leaving the office.

Does a Fast Breast MRI make sense for me?

The “Fast Breast MRI” is a 10-minute, self-pay examination that scientific studies have shown to be effective in finding invasive breast cancers. It is ideal for women with dense breast tissue who desire additional breast cancer screening but do not meet the criteria to qualify for a conventional breast MRI study based on their lifetime risk for breast cancer. The conventional breast MRI study (45 minutes) is intended for women with a higher risk for developing breast cancer, such as BRCA1/2 genetic mutations, etc. The Fast Breast MRI does not detect the spectrum of diseases that can be detected by the conventional breast MRI exam. As with any screening exam, additional non-cancerous lesions may also be detected that may require biopsy or additional follow-up.

What to Expect

The Fast Breast MRI requires an injection of contrast that is given through an IV. The study will be interpreted by a specially trained breast radiologist and the results will be sent to your doctor. You will need a doctor’s order for this exam. There is no radiation associated with this study.

Who Should Get this Procedure?

The Fast Breast MRI is a low cost, self-pay supplemental study for women with dense breast tissue who want a screening that is more sensitive to breast cancer than mammography. The Fast Breast MRI may detect cancers not visible on a mammogram but is not intended to replace mammography. Routine screening mammograms are still recommended.

To obtain more information or schedule an appointment, call 877-931-3697
