Komen Northeast Ohio Tribute: John Kalbouridis
|
This past week, Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio lost a longtime volunteer, cancer advocate, and friend. John Kalbouridis began volunteering for the Cleveland Race for the Cure in 2011. John became involved with Komen Northeast Ohio through the Race team of Key Bank, where he worked for many years. In 2015, John became the co-chair of the Cleveland Race for the Cure and helped with planning, operations, setup, and day of Race activities. John loved his dogs, his family, and volunteering for causes near to his heart. John was hard working and extremely committed to Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio and our mission. He will be missed by us all. |

Mission Spotlight
Did you know Ohio taxpayers are able to donate a portion of their state income tax refund directly to Ohio’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP)? By checking the BCCP box on the Ohio tax return form, Ohio taxpayers have the power to save a life.
Ohio’s BCCP, funded at
the current levels, is only able to serve about five percent of the eligible
women in Ohio. The BCCP Tax Check-Off enables the program to serve up to
1,700 additional women (an 11 percent increase) with lifesaving and cost-saving
access to early detection, diagnostics, and treatment.
Why check the box? Women
in Ohio are dying from breast cancer at a higher rate than the rest of the
country. Early detection is key to survival and saves money in the long run. At late
stages of breast cancer, treatment can cost three times more than early stage
treatment.
How does BCCP help? The program provides breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic services
to low-income, uninsured, and underinsured women in Ohio. BCCP is a critical and lifesaving safety net for
the working poor in our state.
What is the
impact? More than 270,000 Ohio women
are in need of BCCP services. In the 2014 and 2015 tax years, Ohio citizens
contributed more than $169,000 to the program through the tax check-off,
allowing thousands of additional, resource starved Ohio women entry into the
program. 2016 amounts are unavailable at this time.
What you can do: Check the box on you state income tax return to donate a portion
of your return to BCCP. You could save a life!

Does a Fast Breast MRI make sense for me?
The “Fast Breast MRI” is a 10-minute, self-pay examination that scientific studies have shown to be effective in finding invasive breast cancers. It is ideal for women with dense breast tissue who desire additional breast cancer screening but do not meet the criteria to qualify for a conventional breast MRI study based on their lifetime risk for breast cancer. The conventional breast MRI study (45 minutes) is intended for women with a higher risk for developing breast cancer, such as BRCA1/2 genetic mutations, etc. The Fast Breast MRI does not detect the spectrum of diseases that can be detected by the conventional breast MRI exam. As with any screening exam, additional non-cancerous lesions may also be detected that may require biopsy or additional follow-up.
|
What to Expect
The Fast
Breast MRI requires an injection of contrast that is given through an IV. The
study will be interpreted by a specially trained breast radiologist and the
results will be sent to your doctor. You will need a doctor’s order for this
exam. There is no radiation associated with this study.
Who Should Get this Procedure?
The Fast
Breast MRI is a low cost, self-pay supplemental study for women with dense
breast tissue who want a screening that is more sensitive to breast cancer than
mammography. The Fast Breast MRI may detect cancers not visible on a mammogram
but is not intended to replace mammography. Routine screening mammograms are
still recommended.

appointment, call 877-931-3697.
